Part-time ESL Instructor

Next Step Literacy offers free adult tutoring in reading, writing, math and computers.
We are looking to expand our programming to include evening English as a Second Language (ESL) classes to meet the growing need in the community. To this end, we are looking to hire an experienced ESL instructor to do small group tutoring at our location in Alliston.
As a part-time ESL instructor at Next Step, you will be providing non-credit language instruction to adult learners. Instruction will take place in the evenings. Classes will be approximately 90 minutes in duration. There will be two different levels of classes: one session will be for beginners who are ESL Level 4 and lower, and the other session will be for intermediate learners.
You will be responsible for instructing two classes a week. Each class will be between 1-2 hours in length with 1 hour of prep time per week for a total of 5 hours per week. This is a contract position with the possibility of more hours based on funding and community need.

Duties & Responsibilities:

The following duties and responsibilities will follow Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) and Canadian Language Benchmarks CLB guidelines:

  • assess students to determine their needs and goals;
  • develop lesson and long-range plans that consist of appropriate themes, goals, and objectives to be covered in each instructional session;
  • incorporate speaking, listening, reading, and writing into activities;
  • instruct classes according to learner’s needs in accordance with individual goal paths, levels and needs using appropriate and relevant resources and methods of delivery;
  • organize suitable instructional materials, visual aids, and books;
  • assess student progress according to Canadian Language Benchmarks and Portfolio Based Language Assessment (PBLA) on an ongoing basis;
  • participate in communicating the attendance/participation guidelines and expectations for students;
  • create a comfortable, non-threatening, and engaging environment for the students;
  • be aware of cultural differences and ensure that the rights of all students are respected;
  • develop students’ understanding and appreciation for Canadian society, culture, and traditions;
  • carry out administrative, record-keeping, and reporting duties as required, e.g., collect and provide daily attendance and other statistical information; and
  • participate in required professional development activities, e.g., workshops, conferences, and staff meetings.

Qualifications:

  • TESL Ontario certificate and TESL Ontario membership in good standing;
  • Strong background and abilities to plan and organize the instruction for adult learners;
  • Solid knowledge of Canadian Language Benchmarks and experience in assessing students’ progress according to CLB;
  • Experience in English language instruction;
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion to effectively interact/work with diverse students and staff;
  • Effective communication within a team environment, with staff, students, community, and agency stakeholders;
  • Demonstrated ethical judgment and professional boundaries;
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to the needs of diverse newcomers;
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skill and
  • The ability to be creative and flexible in planning.
